IHIE Membership

Joining IHIE is simple, follow our easy guide below to selecting your level of membership, or visit the Membership Page on the main website.

How to Apply for IHIE Membership

  • Check the details below to select the relevant grade of membership
  • Download and complete the New Member Application Form.
  • Affiliate members (free) should use the Affiliate Application Form.
  • Current members use the Grade Transfer form.
  • Mail the completed form to IHIE, De Morgan House, 58 Russell Square, London, WC1B 4HS or fax on 020 7436 7488.

Membership Grades

There are six grades within the IHIE membership structure.

Fellow (FIHIE)
As a Fellow of the IHIE you will have passed the incorporated or chartered professional review (IPR) with IHIE or another institution. Alternatively you will have 15 years experience with seniority. Full details on passing the IPR are explained in Document IE3. Alternative routes to I.Eng status are explainied in Document IE4.

Member (MIHIE)
As a Member of the IHIE you will have passed IPR part one - Initial Professional Development (IPD) with the IHIE or another institution. Alternatively you will have 10 years experience or AMIHIE plus five years’ experience. Full details on passing the IPD are explained in Document IE2. Also see Document IE1 for an introductory summary on the review process.

Associate Member (AMIHIE)
As and Associate member of the IHIE you will have attained a minimum of an NVQ Level 3 or have passed Part One of the Technician Initial Professional Development Review. You may find it useful to read Document ET1 which explains the flexible routes to Engineering Council registration, why you should become a member, and how to do it.

Graduate Member
To join as a Graduate Member of the IHIE you will have a degree, HND, HNC, National Certificate or equivalent in engineering or another discipline.

Student Member
To join as a Student Member of the IHIE you will be studying at college, full or part time or in training.

Affiliate Member
Affiliate Member status is open to all interested practitioners. Membership at this level is free for the first year.
